A Big Week for Consumer Data

Big box retailer earnings and retail sales this week should provide vital clues to how the US consumer is holding up. Does the ‘Barbie economy’ have, um, legs?

Good morning contrarians! Welcome to the Daily Contrarian, our morning look at events likely to move markets in the day ahead. Today is Monday, Aug. 14.

State of Play

No new information over the weekend. As of 0640 all is pretty quiet:

  • Stock index futures are pointing to gains led by tech, with the Nasdaq up 0.4%. S&P 500 futures are up 0.3%;

  • Commodities aren’t doing anything at all. Copper and oil are unchanged. Crude oil is trading around $83/barrel;

  • Bonds aren’t doing anything either. The 2-year yields 4.90%, the 10-year 4.15%.
